4. PLUMMER-ANDREWS STEPS DOWN, CARRINGTON STEPS INTO CBBC POST.
Theresa Plummer-Andrews, the development exec who has launched scores
of animated and live action kids shows, and helped champion European
produced animated content, is stepping down as head of acquisitions
for CBBC, the children's channel of the BBC. Former BBC executive and
Create TV co-founder Michael Carrington has been appointed the new
acquisitions chief, according to CBBC controller Dorothy Prior.

Carrington returns to CBBC after spending four years as head of
television & new media at independent production company Create TV &
Film Limited. His position starts in January 2004 and will be working
with Plummer-Andrews as she transitions out.

"I'm delighted Michael is joining us. This is one of the most
important jobs in children's television and it's probably the only
role that could tempt Michael away from Create," said Prior.

"He has a thorough knowledge of the children's market place and
considerable experience of buying and co-producing both live action
and animation," Prior continued. "He will be a huge asset to our
senior team and I'm confident he will acquire the very best
children's programming to complement our home-grown output."

Carrington, a co-founder of Create TV & Film in London, is
responsible for providing creative, editorial and managerial
leadership across the company's programming and new media activities.

As CBBC's deputy head of acquisitions from 1993 to 1999, Carrington

digital channels, CBBC and CBeebies, in consultation with the then
deputy director of television, David Docherty.

While at LEGO Media and then Create TV, Carrington helped launched
the BBC TV series LITTLE ROBOTS, as well as the 3D home video movie
BIONICLE: MASK OF LIGHT.

Carrington said: "I'm very much looking forward to returning to CBBC.
This has always been my dream job and while ideally I would have
preferred to stay at Create, the offer of one of the top jobs in
British children's television is one that I could not turn down."

Plummer-Andrews joined the BBC in 1986 as a producer in children's
programs and was later promoted to head of acquisitions and creative
development for BBC Children's Int'l. Plummer-Andrews has launched
many shows and championed working with broadcasters around Europe to
champion the creations of many animators and production companies.

Recent productions include PINGU, SNAILSBURY TALES, POSTMAN PAT, BOB
THE BUILDER, ANDY PANDY, NODDY and BILL & BEN.

Plummer-Andrews in 1997 wrote two articles for AWN - check them out

6. EXEC DIRECTOR ATKIN TO LEAVE VES.
Tom Atkin told VFXWorld that he will be stepping down as founding
exec director of the Visual Effects Society (VES) because he's come
to the realization that "the goal is accomplished and there is
nothing more that I can do at this level. Now that I've built this
organization, it's time to turn it over to the membership to dictate
future policies, goals and business plans."

Atkin announced last week to the VES membership that he will depart
the non-profit organization to seek other entrepreneurial endeavors
when his contract is up on July 31, 2004. But that he intends to
guide the orderly transition of a new executive board and officers
after they are elected in December.

"I consider myself the architect of the VES and couldn't be prouder
or more satisfied with what I've accomplished and how far the
organization has come." In a prepared statement to the members, Atkin
reminded them that there were those who said the establishment of the
VES couldn't be done. "Now I'm here to report that it has been done."

For the past 10 years, Atkin has helped VES become a global presence.
Yet for the first three years, he worked out of two residences while
still consulting with Sony. It took another seven years for VES to
make its mark. During Atkin's reign, VES has successfully launched
five festivals of visual effects in the U.S., three festivals in
Europe and soon a new festival event in Asia, with three more on the
horizon. Also, VES will host its 2nd Annual Awards in February 2004
and recently announced that for the first time a Lifetime Achievement
Award is being given to George Lucas.

Atkin adds that VES has achieved four of the five goals it first
established: Membership growth and development to build a quality
base and good benefits; an awards program; festivals; and archives.
The final goal, distance learning, using assets to target youth for
future storytellers, is still in the works.

As for his future plans Atkin said he will consulting with various
organizations and businesses, and might get involved in content
development. Several business propositions have already been in the
offing, and, a few more nibbles have come in since the announcement
of his departure.

in 1997, is comprised of distinguished visual effects artists and
technologists who are professionally committed to the specialized

reported Channel 4 News. Bonham-Carter will voice new character Lady
Tottington and Fiennes will give life to Lord Victor Quatermaine.
Aardman Animations will begin production on the film, subtitled CURSE
OF THE WERERABBIT, this week for a scheduled 18-month production
slate. The film follows Wallace and Gromit as they hunt down a
mysterious beast, which has been gobbling up their village's prize
vegetables just days before the giant vegetable growing contest. The
$50 million budgeted flick will be released in 2005.

13. NOTHING SCARY ABOUT BROTHER BEAR'S ROARING START.
While Dimension's SCARY MOVIE 3 debuted in the top spot for the
pre-Halloween weekend ended Oct. 26, 2003, scaring up $48.1M, the
real story was Disney's BROTHER BEAR platforming in two theaters in
Los Angeles and New York. The studio's second to last traditionally
animated feature for the foreseeable future growled its way to
$291,940, for an astounding per-screen average of $145,970. BROTHER
BEAR should have a more formidable gross when it opens wide next
weekend. After that the competition gets pretty stiff the rest of
November with the likes of Disney's THE HAUNTED MANSION, Universal's
CAT IN THE HAT, Warner Bros.' LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION and New
Line's ELF.

Meanwhile, New Line's TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake came in second
place with $14.4M and a two-week take of $50.9M. Sony's RADIO debuted
at number three with $13.3M, Fox's courtroom thriller, RUNAWAY JURY,
followed in fourth place with $8.4M and a two-week cume of $24M and
Clint Eastwood's MYSTIC RIVER held the fifth spot for Warner Bros
with $7.7M and a gross of $24.7M. Paramount's SCHOOL OF ROCK dropped
to sixth with $6.5M for a total of $63.3M, Miramax's KILL BILL VOLUME
1 (with vfx by Centro Digital Pictures Ltd. and K.N.B. EFX Group
Inc.) continued its slide to number seven with $6.3M for a cume of
$54M. MGM's talking dog fest, GOOD BOY! (courtesy of Jim Henson
Prods. with vfx from Rainmaker Digital Pictures), collected $5M, good
enough for eighth place, and now has $32M to its credit. The Coen
Bros.' screwball comedy with George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones,
INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, netted $3.6M for Universal in its third outing
at number nine (with vfx by Rhythm & Hues), giving it $28.2M.
Rounding out the top 10 was Disney's romancer, UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN,
which took in $2.2M for a total of $37.2M. Box office information
obtained from boxofficemojo.com.

14. MARVEL'S MAN-THING TO HIT THEATERS IN AUGUST.
Artisan Entertainment has announced that upcoming release on Aug. 27,
2004 of the feature film rendition of Marvel Comics' MAN-THING.
Produced by Marvel Studios and Fierce Entertainment in association
with German equity fund Screenland Movieworld, the film just wrapped
production after an eight-week shoot in Sydney, Australia. Effects
pioneer Brett Leonard (THE LAWNMOWER MAN, T-REX BACK TO THE
CRETACEOUS) directed the film. Hans Rodionoff (THE HOLLOW) adapted
the comic for the screen.

Marvel Studios ceo Avi Arad said, "MAN-THING has been an unbelievably
exciting project for us. We have always felt that this character's
story would translate incredibly well to the big screen as it mixes
horrifying action with a truly mesmerizing and frightful anti-hero.
Brett is seen as one of the true pioneers in the creation of
revolutionary computer-generated and mechanical effects and we now
seen first-hand why. His powerful creative vision has helped bring
this character to life in a thoroughly compelling manner -- so much
that we have decided to fast track it for release next summer, fully
confident in its worldwide appeal."

Commented Artisan Ent. evp Patrick Gunn, "Uncharacteristic of the
typical Marvel characters brought to life on the big screen,
MAN-THING brings a chilling component not previously showcased in
Marvel comic based films. We feel this film impressively introduces
MAN-THING in a manner that will really thrill the viewing public."

Based on the cult comic book series, the Man-Thing is a vengeful
creature born from the evil and injustices perpetrated against both
man and nature. The ensemble cast includes Australian icon Jack
Thompson (BREAKER MORANT), New Zealand actor Rawiri Paratene (WHALE
RIDER) and newcomers Matt Le Nevez, Rachel Taylor and Steve Bastoni.

San Francisco-based Wild Brain will co-produce the latest Corsham
Entertainment (U.K.) show, NATURAL BORN KITTENS, a 26x30 teenage
comedy anime series about four ancient Egyptian cat goddesses posing

Thrown into a modern world whose inhabitants are even weirder than

globe-threatening violence. Stylistically, NATURAL BORN KITTENS
allows the epic, futuristic feel of traditional anime to explode the
conventions of the classic sitcom, according to Corsham co-founder
Alastair Swinnerton.

Wild Brain (www.wildbrain.com) is an award-winning American animation
studio whose client list includes Universal, Twentieth Century Fox,
Disney, DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, EM.TV

Swinnerton, who co-created LEGO's multi-platform hit BIONICLE. Other

17. DICK CLARK PRODS. TO TURN LUANN INTO LIVE-ACTION TV SERIES.
Dick Clark Prods. has acquired the rights to comic strip LUANN to
develop it into a live-action TV series. The comic chronicles Luann,
a typical teenage girl who encounters the day-to-day horrors of
adolescence. Fred Bronson (AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS) will shepard the
project with Dick Clark Prods.' Nicole Raffanello and Larry Klein.

"I realize that adolescence is a very funny time except when you're
in it," said comic creator Greg Evans. "It's a unique phase in life
that's troublesome and hilarious at the same time, particularly for
girls."

Dick Clark added, "It is set apart from others in its genre by its
cliffhanging stories, social relevance and the keen character humor
displayed not only in Luann's persona but in that of her family and
friends as well."

The comic strip was created by Evans in 1985 and now runs in more
than 400 newspapers. LUANN has been nominated five times for Cartoon

19. KISS' PAUL STANLEY PART OF HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS ON THE WB AND KIDS' WB!
The WB offered scary-family-fun during its first-ever all-original
Halloween themed programming lineup on October 24, 2003 (8:00-10:00
pm). The WB kicked-off the fright-night festivities with the second
original primetime special for the network, A SCOOBY-DOO HALLOWEEN
(8:00 pm), followed by BUGS BUNNY'S HOWL-OWEEN SPECIAL (8:30 pm) and
the hilarious horrors in THE WB'S OUTRAGEOUS HALLOWEEN OUTTAKES
(9:00-10:00 pm). On Oct. 25, Kids' WB! offered a holiday-themed
episode of JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES.

From Warner Bros. Animation, The WB introduced the second primetime
special for the network, A SCOOBY-DOO HALLOWEEN. The animated special
is yet another extension of the Scooby-Doo brand, which also includes
the Kids' WB! all-original series WHAT'S NEW SCOOBY-DOO?

In this primetime special, the Scooby Gang heads to the eerie town of
Banning Junction to spend Halloween with Velma's aunt (voiced by
Julia Sweeney), uncle (voiced by Diedrich Bader) and the very
beautiful and equally flirtatious cousin Marcy (voiced by Jenny
McCarthy). The gang joins the townspeople in celebrating their
renowned "100 Years of Halloween" festivities, including a crowning
of the Queen of the Masquerade Ball and an amped out performance by
the rock band KISS (with the voice of Paul Stanley). As strange and
spine-tingling things begin to happen, a fearful townswoman (voiced
by Rhea Perlman) proclaims it is the ghost of Hank Banning, the
town's founder and ousted mayor, back to seek revenge on the town
that wronged him 100 years ago - as his declared prophecy comes true
with signs in the corn fields.

While Shaggy (voiced by Casey Kasem) and Scooby (voiced by Frank
Welker) anxiously wait to meet KISS and go trick-or-treating for tons
of candy, they reluctantly aid Fred (voiced by Welker), Daphne
(voiced by Grey Delisle) and Velma (voiced by Mindy Cohn) to reveal
who is really behind the Halloween mischief. Additional guest-voice
appearances in the special include Stacy Keach, Tom Kenny and Daran
Norris.

Featuring WBA and Hanna-Barbera classic cartoon characters, Bugs
takes on ghosts, ghouls and goblins in this "trick-or-treat" holiday
tale, BUGS BUNNY'S HOWL-OWEEN SPECIAL. Off trick-or-treating
disguised as a witch, Bugs arrives at Witch Hazel's door. She
considers him an enemy and tries to eliminate him with one of her
special brews. In the adventures that ensue, Witch Hazel and Bugs try
to best each other as the #1 Halloween scare, involving a number of
innocent bystanders along the way. Before the night is out, Tweety
and Daffy Duck will become monsters, Speedy Gonzales will become
Witch Hazel's double and Porky Pig and Sylvester will attempt to fend
off the "hare-raising" haunts.

Hosted by Anthony Anderson (ALL ABOUT THE ANDERSONS), who is in SCARY
MOVIE 3, THE WB'S OUTRAGEOUS HALLOWEEN OUTTAKES one-hour special
consisted of bloopers from more than a dozen horror movies, including
classics THE EXORCIST, THE HOWLING, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, the re-make
of WILLARD, and the acclaimed television series The X-FILES. The
special also included hidden camera/practical jokes and a hilarious
Halloween home video.

Now in its fourth season, JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES featured a festive
Halloween Oct. 25 at 9:00 am ET/8:00 am PT on Kids' WB! with the
holiday-themed episode, "Fright Night Fight" that has all the
trademarks of a good Halloween party, complete with costumes,
treats...and a few good tricks.

The series features action hero Jackie Chan and his team, including
Uncle, Tohru and his feisty niece Jade, as they attempt to keep the
evil Tarakudo and his weary Henchmen from finding nine powerful
Japanese Oni Masks scattered across the globe. In this episode, as
Halloween approaches, Paco - protégé of Jackie's good friend El Toro
- is determined to have a scarier costume than Jade, so he decides to
try on one of the mystical Oni Masks. Not realizing the true powers
the mask holds within, he is transformed into the mask's "demon"
Paco. He kidnaps Jade, trying to prove he has the most frightening
costume for Halloween.

Uncle and Tohru mistakenly hand out the chi spell ingredient needed
to release Paco from the Oni Mask to a trick-or-treater. They race
against time to retrieve the ingredient before "demon" Paco destroys
Jackie and the team.

JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES is produced by Sony Pictures Television for
Kids WB! Jeff Kline, Duane Capizzi, Jackie Chan, Willie Chan, Brian
Gersh and Solon So serve as exec producers.

22. OUTKAST LIKES THE WAY MONEYSHOTS MAKES THEM MOVE IN NEW VIDEOS.
Moneyshots recently completed work on two music videos for OutKast's
HEY YA! and I LIKE THE WAY YOU MOVE. Both videos were conceived,
produced and edited to play together or separately and have been
released simultaneously.

HEY YA! features OutKast's Andre 3000 performing all the roles --
lead singer, guitar, bass, keyboard, drums and back-up singers -- for
a '60s band called Love Below. The video was shot over two days at
Universal Studios on a stage styled and equipped to emulate the look
and feel of an old ED SULLIVAN SHOW television stage complete with
60s era television cameras and about 60 teenagers screaming in the
audience.

Moneyshots consulted on-set with director Bryan Barber and director
of photography Crash beginning the first day shooting the audience
sequences and various cut-away shots. The second day motion control
was shot. Barber wanted to show all the roles Andre was performing in
one continuous camera move, with the camera always moving throughout
the song.

"This is definitely the most ambitious motion control shoot we have
ever done and maybe even anyone has done," said Elad Offer,
Moneyshots' creative director. "We shot eight takes of three
different 4-1/2-minute-long motion control moves. I think the only
reason we were able to actually achieve all this in one day was
because Simon Wakely and his crew from Camera Control are some of the
most experienced motion control crews on the planet."

Moneyshots used several flame and combustion workstations to
rotoscope Andre out of the many individual passes and then place him
back into one master pass, blending and choreographing all the roles.
A number of greenscreen segments were also shot to allow Moneyshots
to take the performers and place their images into television camera
monitors.

I LIKE THE WAY YOU MOVE video underwent an ambitious last minute
makeover after the HEY YA! video turned out so well. The initial
concept was to shoot OutKast's Big Boi in an old style mechanic's
garage where Big Boi arrive to find some hardworking beauties wearing
little more than grease and sweat and then to cut away to a New York
back-street dance sequence. The final video retained the garage but
abandoned the back-street dance sequence for a grand ballroom, Asian
martial arts sequence and an African sequence.

An old '60s style mechanic's garage was filmed on location in Los
Angeles and stocked with vintage cars and scantily-clad women.
Moneyshots and director Barber used greenscreens allowing the
transportation of Big Boi from the garage to the daydream settings.
The new environments have a 2D cut-away look like a live-action
diorama. A locked-off camera was used for all shots in order that all
elements could later be moved within 3D space, without the
corresponding perspective change.

Offer said, "We relied heavily on the 3D nature of Discreet's flame.
All these 3 dimensional setups were created within flame with very
little help from Maya. This saved us a lot of time because we didn't
have to go back and forth on the approval process. The same artist
could take the shot from conception to delivery. The final result had
a 2D cutout feeling, almost like a pop-up up map come to life. We
also relied heavily on flame 8's ability to use high-resolution
images, which allowed us to be completely free with our CG camera and
get really close to objects.

Commenting on the digital creation of the grand ballroom using 2D and
3D elements, Chris Eckardt, Moneyshots' exec producer, said, "This
was no mere set extension, but an entirely unique and complete CG
environment populated with cool artists and hot women strutting their
stuff. Stylistically we were doing something more graphical, adding
our own little elements to spice up the old rap music video look."

23. RADIUM'S MCGOWAN TALKS TRASH IN HIP ANTI-LITTER PSA.
Ogilvy PR recently commissioned leading digital effects and design
studio Radium to direct and design a hip anti-litter PSA. The PSA is
part of the L.A. County Department of Public Works' efforts to inform
people about the negative impact littering has on the environment.

The :30 spot, CAN IT, shows young people in various outdoor
situations -- on a city sidewalk, a park, and public beach --
throwing away garbage into trashcans, rather than in their
environment. "Of all the places you can throw something out, a
trashcan works best," explains the voiceover. "'Cause everything
that's thrown in the street can wash down storm drains and end up in
the ocean. So keep our neighborhoods and beaches clean. Can it. To
talk trash, call 1 888 CLEAN LA."

According to Radium designer/director Tuesday McGowan, the challenge
was to take a mundane message -- in this case, not to litter -- and
make it vital and interesting, as well as increasing overall
awareness. McGowan worked with photographer Mike Martin to shoot
three people using digital stills in slow motion for a stop-motion
technique. They shot thousands of stills to capture moments of fluid
motion, which gave it a unique and signature look.

"The idea was to set up scenes of young people in various
environments eating or drinking and as they appear to be about to
litter -- a trash can suddenly materializes in a 3D cubist transition
as we witness the person actually throwing the trash away," McGowan
explained. "Our goal was to show the simple and quotidian act of
throwing something away as significant."

McGowan incorporated the look of the branding identity of the "Can
It" campaign by introducing a mint green and red graphic stripe
device that follows the individuals through their environments and
acts as a visual mnemonic for anti-litter awareness.

McGowan collaborated with Radium editor Alan Chimenti to edit the
spot, working closely to capture the rhythm of the stop-motion and
subtlety of the action. Radium inferno artist/creative director Simon
Mowbray created the signature transitions while after effects artist
Julie Jang created the line-art animations. The technology utilized
by Radium included Avid, Inferno, After Effects, Illustrator and
Photoshop.

Radium (www.radium.com) is located at 321 11th Street in San
Francisco and 720 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 200 in Santa Monica.

24. VELOCITY DESIGN HELPS HBO SUNDAY SPOTS COME HOME.
Velocity Design Group in New York City has teamed up again with the
creatives at HBO to craft the network's new Sunday night lineup
branding campaign, making the network's stars sing the same tune -
Mel Torme's rendition of "Comin' Home." The song was selected after
an extensive search for one that conveyed the desired mood and
message. Scores of tapes were screened at Velocity and HBO to find
the longest moments of serendipitous synchronicity.

Some of the shots demanded a great deal of finessing and time
re-mapping in Adobe After Affects to synch them properly. The process
was complex due to the extensive list of characters from THE
SOPRANOS, SEX AND THE CITY, SIX FEET UNDER, THE WIRE and CURB YOUR
ENTHUSIASM required to be in the spot.

"A project like this isn't for the faint of heart," explained
Velocity's president Bryan Fernandez. "It really takes a level of
commitment and confidence that only comes from experience. We faced a
similar 'can this even be done' situation with HBO's CAST PARTY
on-air promo where we rotoscoped more than 50 of HBO's original
programming characters into a single party environment."

After the COMIN' HOME spot aired, it was so well received that a
second version with entirely new clips was immediately put into
development. Having already developed a process and procedure to
complete the spot, the second spot was an opportunity for Velocity to
find even more interesting and impressive synchronicity.

Karen Sands was the creative director and Kathy Rocklein was the
producer for HBO. Bryan Fernandez and Paul Waszak were the designers
for Velocity (www.velocityny.com).

27. A MERRIE, LOONEY DVD SET.
Finally, the long-awaited THE LOONEY TUNES GOLDEN COLLECTION (Warner
Home Video, $64.92) hit DVD on Oct. 28, 2003 with thunderous,
anvil-dropping fanfare. 56 classic Warner Bros. shorts, restored and
remastered uncut to a bright and shiny Technicolor glory, thanks to
the patience and prodding of historian Jerry Beck, who aided in the
production of this indispensable four-disc set. While purists are
already quibbling about the "erratic" selection (Charles Solomon
rightly points out that is slanted a bit too heavily toward Chuck
Jones at the expense of Tex Avery, Bob Clampett and Frank Tashlin),
please keep in mind that this is merely the first of what could be
many, but only if this proves profitable.

But the gang's all here, including Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Elmer,
Sylvester, Tweety, Taz, Yosemite and Road Runner, barely scratching
the surface of a treasure trove of 1,000 shorts. In addition to the
cartoons are lots of historical supplements (including audio
commentary by Beck, filmmaker Greg Ford or actor Stan Freberg. Plus
two docs, one new - IRREVERENT IMAGINATION: THE GOLDEN AGE OF LOONEY
TUNES, and one from 1975, THE BOYS FROM TERMITE TERRACE, containing

28. MILLENNIUM ACTRESS DEBUTS ON DVD.
Renowned anime director Satoshi Kon's critically acclaimed,
award-winning second feature, MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, made its highly
anticipated debut on DVD on Oct 28, 2003 (DreamWorks Home
Entertainment, $19.99). The movie showcases Kon's starting visual
style and unique storyline by seamlessly blending fantasy and
reality, memory and perception, into an epic adventure of fate,
destiny and the history of Japanese cinema. Following an HD transfer
incorporating a meticulous digital clean up of film artifacts, the
DVD release marks the first time audiences can view the film in its
most pristine representation. In addition, the DVD includes a
behind-the-scenes look at the highly innovative creative process
involved in bringing this story to life.

29. HULK DEVOURS ON DVD.
Ang Lee's controversial, angst-ridden adaptation of the popular
Marvel comic, HULK, premiered Oct. 28, 2003 on DVD (Universal Home
Entertainment, $26.98). The complex, tragic story aside (the
scientific sins of the father are truly visited on the son), there's
the more intriguing issue of Industrial Light & Magic's CG work on
the Hulk to reconsider. No matter what your views on the aesthetic
choices, the technical advances in character animation make the Hulk
a marvel to watch. In terms of extras, the DVD includes "The Making
of the Hulk," which dissects the film into "ILM," "Cast and Crew,"
"Stunts & Physical Effects" and "Music." There are featurettes on how
"The Dogfight" sequence was put together. You can also view how
various illustrators from around the globe create a scene from the
film in comic book form; and there's an evolution of the Hulk that
explores the metamorphosis of Bruce Banner from comic book to screen.
Finally, there's "The Incredible Ang Lee" that pays tribute to the
director's hands-on approach, including his donning the motion
capture suit to create the Hulk's performance.
